Hash House Harriers?
What is it? Who are they?

Hash House Harriers History

The drunkards with a running problem... Have you heard of those? That is the infamous Hash House Harriers (links you to the a main Hash House Harriers page: http://harrier.org) and they have clubs all over the world. I doubt anyone knows exactly how many there are. Would 20'000 be a valid guess? They come and go - probably much depends on the beer organizers for their survival. If you want to find one in your city, click here!

The Hash House Harriers were officially founded just before WW2 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. However, only in the last 15,  20 years or so did it get popular worldwide.

Every 2 years (even numbers) the Interhash takes place. The hash to organize the event is similarly selected like the Olympics (if you allow the comparison). Click on the links if you want to see where the Interhash is in 2002.

The Pattaya Hash was founded by an ex Bang-kokian expat, Molly Kirgis "Matress", with the help of her husband Hans, both Germans. The first run on January 7th 1984 had precisly 12 'hashers', mostly from the Bangkok hash. They probably came for moral support. Among those 12 was one world famous hasher who died January 24th 1998, Tim Hughes "Magic".

For the first 3 months the Pattaya Hash was a monthly occurenance and in April this changed to a bi-monthly event. In November of the same year we booked 3 runs and as of December 1984 it became what it is know among the early Pattaya hashers: The Pattaya Monday Hash.

The Monday Hash was not always the Monday Hash. It started as a Saturday hash until Frank Benfield "The Whorator", the first Grandmaster of the PH3, showed up end of August. He changed it to Thursday. That didn't last long though and as of November 26th 1984, after 19 total runs (13 Saturdays and 6 Thursdays) it became The Pattaya (Monday) Mixed Hash House Harriers.

A big milestone in our history was definitely the Interhash 1986, March 28-30. Pattaya hosted it, but it was truely Bangkok who got 'the job'.

Thanks to the strong ties among the two hashes it was decided Pattaya is a better place to host the event. The PH3 Monday run after the Interhash weekend had the most runners ever: 576.

Twice we were the hosts for Hash Asia, 1990 and 1992. Hash Asia 1990 booked a strong 151 hashers while 2 years later it was mere 68. However, the suprise came the Monday after when we had 119 hashers. So much for Hash Asia events. Who needs those long weekend events?

The Pattaya Hash has been on a gradual rise of hashers and hit its higest plateau during 1990-92. This high was followed by a low during 1994-97. Since then we have been on a rise again. 1998 is equal to the high plateaus in the early 90's, 1999 has overshot it and it remains to be seen what the year 2000 will bring.

Thanks go to Molly Kirgis and BJ, who joined on run #2. BJ supported Molly during these hard times of starting a hash in a town where hashing wasn't known and the local's most popular fitness activity was bar hopping.

A Monday at the Pattaya Hash...
General Hash History | The Pattaya Hash History | Back to Top

The Pattaya Hash House Harriers...... ...meet every Monday at the Scandi Bar at Pattaya Beach Road. A few years ago I took on the job as the sign-up, making sure I get all you names correctly for our database. Yeap, despite this being Pattaya and we are being known as drunkards we had some very conscientious folks starting our hash, planting that 'keep records' seed at an early age! Thanks go to Molly Kirgis "The Mattress".

What takes place on these Hash-days?
Most hashers, and  ‘would-like-to-be-hashers’ (virgins), sign-up and pay here in town. An organized bus brings us out of town to a site (ingeniously named ‘a-site’) the 'run setters' (hares) have chosen. (Every week different hares set the run).

Après-Running
After the run we cool-down. How we cool-down is left to each individual. Static stretching, bicep conditioning with beer bottles, cheek muscle exercises with fruit or chips (or a fag), high-low 'tone'-ing everywhere......until the circle is formed.

Running?
We gather together and get a short intro to what to expect on the run. And then it is off running into the countryside (or walking, or not getting off at all). We follow paper until we come to a cross (check) indicating that the paper has stopped. Well, it is still out there somewhere, but we have to look for it. We always find it, and more often then not we find paper that leads us to a false trail. This goes on for about 45 minutes. Much longer runs have been recorded in our history, and, of course, much shorter ones as well.

Can you imagine what a sight we hashers must be for an innocent by passer when he sees those spotlights in the dark coming off our beer truck with mostly white people standing around circling a block of ice? It’s the P-Hash-cult. I can't write down what happens during a circle, but if you want to read about it, click here. The link will redirect you to our scribe or hash sheet page at our official PH3 web site. After each run this page is updated accordingly.

Back in Pattaya
The end of a Hash-day 'starts' in one of our Hash Happy Hour bars. The bars provide food and shelter (I couldn't resist, this is really true when you get to know some of our heavier drinking drunkards) and happy hour prices for all the Hash-T-Shirt wearer.

The end of the 'start' of the end.... that is up to you!
